An Interplay of Dance, Art & MediaThe story of one woman’s life, pushed to the edge…shedding her old story to claim the new
Theater lights dim to inky blackness. A heartbeat begins to register in our consciousness, as a gurney spins in and music rises to high intensity. Feeling the urgency, a doctor attends to the patient in distress. Several doctors surround her, an EKG line flashing behind her. A group of family and friends hover in the foreground in despair. The erratic heart monitor begins to slow. As the scene ends, we hear the flatline and wonder if she will survive. We don’t even know her, yet somehow we find ourselves caring, willing her to survive.
An unsteady voice begins…I’m 47, I feel so cold, and I don’t know why…
Performed by the New Ground Theatre Dance Company under the artistic direction of Coleen Lorenz, The Terrain Project is a captivating multimedia performance story that combines dance and projected art imagery with spoken word and original music – all of which show what it is to be a contemporary woman in American culture. Originallydeveloped by Johanna Uribes, Terrain began as a series of paintings and interviews that focus on the “skin wisdom” we acquire as we travel life’s highway, highlighting the physical and emotional terrain of this uniquely feminine journey. Terrain is a reminder of mid-life’s passageway into sublime splendor as we are reborn into the second half of our lives. Our time is new, our time is now!
